Pickup Systems team up with GSF Slides for safer storage

Pickup Systems are vehicle converters who provide a secure storage solution to empty pickup trucks. As the sole distributors of ‘Avenger Workstyle’ truck tops they are able to provide a high quality and robust access system that gives operators all round access to the vehicle and the equipment inside.

The system was originally designed for the Utility Sector however Pickup Systems soon realised that their system could be adapted to suit the needs of the Fire and Rescue market.

Pickup Systems had developed a drawer slide with a c-channel roller system- very similar to office filing cabinets. This was effective but not ideal. And they knew they needed a more rugged solution for the Fire Sector.

“We needed a cost effective slide solution with a large full extension and high load capacities,” said John Mcgauley, Director of Pickup Systems, “I spoke to the Hampshire Fire service who recommended GSF Slides.”

The GSF Container Slide is an all purpose 3 beam full extension telescopic slide, ideal for a vast range of applications such as drawers and storage units. The Container slide provided a cost effective solution which was able to withstand a maximum load of 75 kilos even on an extension of 1400mm.

“The container slide was perfect for our Utility Spec Vehicles,” said John, “but for the Fire Vehicle Spec we needed an even more robust slide solution. We used GSF’s RA7 slide. An extremely heavy duty slide that has been tested to carry 90kg even at its full extension of 1700m, this was exactly what the fire service needed.”

GSF’s extensive range of high strength, fully field tested products have enabled Pickup Systems to utilise a small amount of space to its maximum potential. The Container and RA7 Slides have ensured that Pickup Systems can offer a much larger ‘Coffin Drawer’ which can maintain a greater maximum load capacity on a larger extension.

“GSF have also provided us with a very functional tool mounting system that provided and space saving economic storage solution which we use for brushes and fire beaters they provide easy access in an emergency situation even with a gloved hand.” Explains John, “Pro Mount has been specially designed as a tool storage solution and it is cheaper and easier to use than other tool storage methods, its not even feasible to design or make your own.”

GSF Slide and Tilt - safe, efficient tool storage

GSF’s innovative Slide and Tilt system provides a safe and efficient storage solution for the defence, blue light and fire and rescue markets. With exceptional smooth movement, high load capacity and rugged low weight components the GSF Slide and Tilt system features slam shut locking mechanisms making this system one of the safest configurations for operators to use.

Operator safety is a key consideration in the design of all GSF products and the Slide and tilt system is no exception. GSF’s design ensures a more controlled opening movement allowing the operator to maintain maximum control over the drawer.

According to Jeremy Binnington, “Swing boards are a very useful and interesting way of storing equipment however they don’t provide the same level of accessibility as slide drawers. There’s no extension on the swing boards and operators need space to open and access the equipment. Our slide and tilt system, however, provides a safe and efficient storage solution designed with the safety of the operator in mind and also ensuring that all tools and equipment are immediately accessible.”

GSF Slides into the States as standard

GSF Slides have recently returned from the Fire Department Instructors’ Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis. With more than 900 manufacturers and suppliers showcasing their latest products and technologies the FDIC is arguably the world’s largest fire show.

It was an exciting year for GSF and as well as having their products demonstrated on a number of vehicles at the show GSF has also ensured that one of the US’s most successful OEM’s are now making GSF products standard across their range.

I asked Alec Don, GSF’s Export Director why GSF was having such a positive impact in the US.

“Our products are fully field tested, featuring high strength components and providing maximum health and safety benefits for the fire operators. These are the qualities that make GSF such an important supplier and as new users become more convinced about the merits our products can offer we know that they will start calling for more and more GSF products.”

GSF’s telescopic slides and slide and tilt systems have already impressed the US markets and Alec has high hopes for the future of Europe.

“One of the things that interested me was that the Pro Mount range of tool mount products is now in almost universal use on US fire trucks. This is down to the obvious quality of the product guaranteed for the entire vehicle life, the fact that it is now a complete range with a solution for safely stowing every type of fire tool, and finally that there is an undoubted benefit for OEMs to standardise on an off-the-shelf range of tool mounting, as opposed to trying to continuously design and fabricate their own mounting solutions. We fully expect Pro Mount to be as important a product in the European market as it is in the US and the UK.”

Safety at sea with the Pro Mount System

Tool safety at sea is a paramount concern for private boat owners and commercial shipping operators alike.

One of the main problems is the constant battle against corrosion. Greasing edge tools and wrapping them in oil-soaked cloths is an obvious necessary and a basic precaution. This helps to keep your tools ship-shape and reduces the necessity to replace damaged and rusty tools. However, rust and corrosion are only some of the factors that can lead to tool damage.

Loose tools can cause numerous problems at sea and safe tool storage can prevent a range of costly, frustrating and dangerous situations. Loose tools can become chipped and damaged through repetitive knocks. Direct damage of this kind can’t be treated with an oiled cloth and, more than likely, your tools will need to be replaced.

Without suitable storage there is more of a chance that your tools will become misplaced, not only very frustrating but also very dangerous if you need to make repairs at sea.

Tools need to remain secure during rough sailing. This is an important consideration concerning the health and safety of you, your passengers and your boat!

Until recently there have been few methods of onboard tool storage. These include plastic bags, boxes, bungee cord and Velcro. Most of these are ineffective.

Bags tear and burst, boxes allow tools to roll and bang and even bungee cords and Velcro have their limit. Velcro for example can suffer from hard handling and extreme weather conditions which can compromise the material’s strength and purpose leaving it ineffective and inefficient. However thanks to GSF Slides there is a new storage solution.

The Pro Mount tool mounting system has been meticulously tested by the US navy and is proven to be a rugged tool storage solution. Made of highly durable and non corrosive materials, including polypropylene, glassed filled nylons and a mixture of high silicon / high rubber elastics, the Pro Mount brackets are resistant to UV damage, corrosion and vibration making it an exceptional storage solution even at sea.

Indeed US Navy has commended the products rugged fast lock and instant release mechanisms and recommended them for ‘all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defence,’ having proved highly dependable in emergency and hostile environments.

The system is versatile and flexible allowing you to create a bespoke tool storage system that meets your exact needs. In fact we’re so confident in the Pro Mount System that we will offer a lifetime guarantee if any part of the system fails under normal use.

Our products have a very good reputation; durable, hard wearing and engineered with precision in mind our team knows that they don’t have to compromise when they meet clients.

GSF’s telescopic drawer slides, for example, are made from high strength cold rolled steel which maximises their load capacity and yield strength. Test for the Best

The Pro Mount Tool Mounting System has been specifically designed to provide a secure method for tool storage. Having been rigorously tested by the US Navy the Pro Mount tool mounting system has been praised for it’s health and safety benefits and longwearing work-life, as well as it’s practical and useful design.  Current tool mounting systems used by the UK military are generally designed from fibreglass and Velcro products which are not as durable and suffer from hard handling, corrosion and deterioration.

The US Navy shock tested the Pro Mount system in line with their MIL-S-901D qualification. Nine high impact blows were conducted vertically, 30 degrees on a front down inclination and a 30 degree side down inclination, to simulate the rough seas and the type of damage incurred during wartime service, such as the effects of nuclear or conventional weapons.

The materials used in the system have also been tested and made of highly durable and non corrosive materials, including polypropylene, glassed filled nylons and a mixture of high silicon and high rubber elastics in its strengthening straps and soft mounts.

Indeed US Navy has commended the products rugged fast lock and instant release mechanisms and recommended them for ‘all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense,’ having proved highly dependable in emergency and hostile environments.

Initial trials have been so successful that the system is currently being installed in the US latest aircraft carrier and across the US Airforce and Military.

If You Can Make It there, You Can Make It Anywhere...

GSF Slides are delighted to announce a fantastic business opportunity with KME Fire Apparatus - manufacturers of a full range of fire

vehicles and apparatus. The venture, which will see GSF Slides being rolled out across the whole product line, with initial implementation across KME's rescue vehicles to start with.

We asked Andrew Yenser, Rescue Product Manager at KME, to take some time in answering a few questions.

1. What type of vehicles are the GSF slides being used on?

Currently the slides are being integrated onto our Rescuer trucks and then t the balance of our product lines. The first GSF product we will be using will be the slide / tilt and later adding the RA5 and RA7 slide assemblies to production.

2. What are the unique features of this product and the equipment KME makes when fighting fires?

The strength and quality of the GSF slides are what caught our attention; both are qualities to which we build our apparatus. The fluid movememt of the slide/tilt operation coupled with GSF Slide's ability to provide proof of reliability through testing, gave our customers a sense of comfort to make a change.

3. What are the benefits of using this product?

The installation of the product has been easy to integrate into our production. Prior to offering GSF products on our apparatus, an evaluating committee at KME thoroughly reviewed the materials, mechanics, serviceability and availability of the slides. Approving new products by committee allows KME to ensure components meet both our safety and quality requirements.
